Photo ID Required for 2024 Primary Election
On April 28, 2023, the North Carolina Supreme Court reversed an injunction against implementation of photo ID legislation. As a result, photo ID laws enacted in 2018 and 2019 will be implemented moving forward, starting with the municipal elections in November 2023.
Voters will be asked to show photo ID when voting in North Carolina. For most voters, they will simply show their driver's license, but there are many other acceptable photo IDs.
If a voter does not have an acceptable photo ID, they can get a free No-Fee ID Card from the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV). Find more information under "No-Fee ID Cards" at State IDs| NCDMV.
For more information on photo ID, please visit the State Board of Elections website.
