Choosing A Pet

Choosing a pet is an important and often difficult decision. Millions of pets are sent to animal shelters across the country because the pet did not meet the family's expectations or lifestyle. Adopting a pet is a life-long commitment. Not only will your pet become a part of your family, but it has been shown that pets improve our lives and our health. The best way to select a pet is to ask yourself some basic questions about yourself, your family, and the type of pet you want.

Does a pet fit into your budget?

Food and accessories for a small dog or cat average $150.00 per year; for a medium dog $300.00; for a large dog $450.00. Veterinary care fees range from $100.00-$300.00 per year for the first 5 years for cats and dogs and can increase substantially in the later years of life. Grooming and boarding fees are an additional $125.00-$200.00 per year.

Do you have adequate time to spend with a pet?

Pets need love and attention. Dogs require far more time and effort than cats. Cats are wonderful for people who like companionship but don't have time to walk a dog everyday or let it out to do it's "business". Puppies need additional time devoted to shape his/her behavior and training. Dogs need adequate room to play and exercise and should be walked often. It is strongly encouraged to enroll your adopted animal in an obedience class. These classes help by teaching the adopter how to train their new pet so they can avoid many of the behavior problems that may develop without training.

Where you live?

If you rent or live in restricted neighborhoods keep in mind that there are places that do not allow pets at all, while others allow only small dogs or cats. There may also be restrictions on the numbers of pets you may have. If you rent Caldwell County Animal Control requires a letter from your landlord at the time of adoption specifying that the animal you are wishing to adopt is allowed at your residence.

If you would like the professional staff of Caldwell County Animal Control to assist you in the selection of your next pet, please call us or email us to schedule an appointment to meet with an adoption counselor.

Please do not adopt a pet as a surprise gift.

Many pets are turned into animal shelters every year because the pet was unwanted. If you want to give a pet as a gift, please bring the recipient of the pet with you to choose one for themselves.
