Twenty-four cases — 16 in the 28645 Zip code, four in 28630, two in 28638, one in 28667, and one in 28601 — were reported. Three patients are under the age of 17; three are between 18 and 24; nine are between 25 and 49; four patients are between 50 and 64; four are between 65 and 74; and one is over the age of 75.

According to the NC Department of Health and Human Services, 9,931 COVID-19 first doses have been administered in Caldwell County and 3,944 second doses. The Health Department has encountered a shortage of second doses of the Pfizer vaccine. The issue arose after second doses were given to people who received their first dose at another location, an action that follows guidance provided by the state.

“We are working with the state to find second doses and reschedule appointments for anyone in need of their second dose of Pfizer,” explained Caldwell County Public Health Director Anna Martin. “We hope to have the situation rectified this week.”

Appointments for first doses continue this week and are being scheduled with people 65 and older who have signed up for the Health Department’s waiting list. Due to the length of the waiting list and limited supply of vaccine, it may take four to six weeks for people in this age group to receive a call for an appointment.

Anyone can sign up for the vaccine waiting list online at vaccine.caldwellcountync.org, or by calling 828-426-8486 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For information about being vaccinated by Caldwell UNC Health Care, visit YourShot.org or call 828-757-6487.
